Karen
DeSoto, has inspired many young people during her career, in schools, her
community, and on television. She works tirelessly with organizations and
speaking appearances on behalf of children, civil equality, and education in
her community. In her appearances at school and events, she is always frank,
open and engaging, often discussing the challenges and rewards facing Hispanics
in the legal profession and in law enforcement. She herself is a Hispanic that
has met those challenges, rising to the position of Corporate Counsel for the
city of Jersey City (2001-2004), and currently an on-air legal analyst
correspondent for NBC News.
In
2015 Karen Desoto was instrumental in the formation and development of the
Institute for Dispute Resolution (IDR) at the School of Business (New Jersey
City University) where she serves as a Co-Director.
Her
law career, which previously included public defender, prosecutor, private
practice attorney, and former Corporate Counsel for the city of Jersey City has
gained her accolades throughout the years, including being selected Attorney of
the Year by the Puerto Rican Heritage Festival committee.
Yet
she has never lost focus of her community, working not only with non-profits
(and other organizations) for the benefit of children, but also working with
other civil rights leaders in and out of Hudson County to achieve various
agendas. This has made her “a force to be reckoned with” according The Hudson
Reporter in their Top 50 Most Influential List, in an article entailed They’ve Got the Power.
She
began her television career in 2000 when she first aired on CourtTV and later
MSNBC. Currently she is a legal analyst for NBC News, often appearing on The
Today Show and various news shows on MSNBC. She has also appeared on ABC, FOX,
and CNN.
She
appears to bring legal insights to the general public on topics and cases of
national importance, like the particular show where she joined Jason Johnson on
Weekends with Alex Witt on MSNBC to talk over the NBC-Marist Poll on white and
black attitudes about law enforcement, along with Republican strategist Joe
Watkins. Previous cases and trials include, Murray Conrad
(Michael Jackson death), Robert Durst, Bill Cosby, and
the Macneil Martin.
